Perhaps you’re familiar with this acronym? Goals are quite simply better and easier to accomplish if they include greater detail. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-limited are the details included in S.M.A.R.T goals. The following goal is missing much detail; I want to lose weight. Specially how much weight? Stating the number and unit of measurement (pounds or kilograms) offers more clarity. Achievable and Realistic in this case applies to the amount of weight that you want to lose as well as the Time-limit you’ve chosen. Losing 10 pounds in one week is not Realistic or healthy. It’s important to recognize that you didn’t gain that weight in one week so don’t expect to lose it in that unrealistic time-limit either. Including more details in your goal makes it more achievable because you understand it better!
