Prime Importance

The unfortunate misconception about protein is the amount we require in order for it to do the job, of prime importance, that is building and repairing our tissues, hormones and neurotransmitters. Because of its definition and mass marketing many have fallen under the false understanding that it should take center stage or even worse, be a solo act in our dietary experience. We simply do not require as much as some would have us believe. Your body’s favorite source of energy is carbohydrates and the act of building and repairing these tissues and cellular messengers requires this energy. Ever heard the term, “protein sparing” when speaking of carbs? The Recommended Dietary Allowance for healthy adults in Canada is .8 grams per kilogram of ideal (healthy) body weight. Some studies also indicate a positive nitrogen balance (indication of adequate protein intake) in endurance athletes consuming only 10% of their calories from protein. A significant bonus of prioritizing whole and minimally processed plant foods (aka carbs) is that they offer dietary fiber in varying amounts which supports a healthy gut microbiota. Without this fundamental circumstance many systems in our body would be compromised such as; digestion, immunity and mental well-being. Sounds like prime importance to me!
