The most widely accepted healthy diet is one based on whole and minimally processed plant foods such as; vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. It avoids or minimizes junk foods and animal products, specifically fatty meats and dairy like those found in or from animals with legs. These attributes can be found in Canada’s Food Guide, the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet and the MIND diet, all of which are research based and suggested to support weight management, prevention and treatment of heart disease, diabetes (hormone disregulation) and cognitive decline (dementia). None of these are new though they are regularly updated as new research becomes available. Perhaps the best way to feel established and successful with your diet is to adopt a new approach, making small changes over time and not biting off more than you can chew.
