I adopted a plant powered diet over the span of about five years for wellness and weight loss. It has been by far the easiest way I have ever lost and maintained my weight! Dietary choices of the past yielded losses and gains of up to thirty pounds through my twenties, thirties and most of my fourties. My current diet is plant dominant with maybe one serving of fish weekly and has kept my weight steady within five pounds for the past five years. That’s through the pandemic, job loss, mild depression and menopause.
I didn’t enter into this lifestyle in a hasty way or without careful consideration because that kind of transition never works. This I know from experience, as indicated above. Factors that went into and continue to support my choices include my undying love of flavorful food, my profound interest in maintaining a healthy body, quite literally putting my money where my mouth is by actively participating in the lifestyle that I teach clients and my personal efforts to save our planet.
The United Nations released a study in 2010 urging a global reduction in meat and dairy consumption. Our population is growing and we must eat in order to survive but we choose to eat can have a dramatic effect on both our health and the health of our planet. With animal agriculture accounting for 70% of global freshwater consumption, 38% of total land use and 19% of the greenhouse gas emissions, people choosing to eat less or none of these products would be doing the planet, and themselves, a great service!
