Nutrition In A Nutshell

In an effort to simplify dietary choices for my clients we’ve taken to identifying foods as good or bad. Using this process increases their awareness of meal quality in the simplest way possible. Nuts and seeds are good because they include unsaturated fat, carbohydrates, fiber and protein. It would be safe to include all whole plant food into the good catagory for similar reasons. The nutrient breakdown for most fruits, veggies, legumes, and grains is carb and fiber rich with varying amounts of protein and minimal or no fat. These foods promote healthy digestion, weight management, disease prevention, hormone balance and mental clarity. All good!

Saturated fat, on the other hand, is bad. Found in almost all animal products such as meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and certain fish, it carrys some heavy consequences. Increased blood viscosity (think gravy) is linked to insulin resistance, which leads to fat accumulation, trouble losing it, and type 2 diabetes. Cardiovascular disease and some cancers have also been correlated to a diet that is high in these foods.

Since all or nothing rarely works, try this approach. Simplify your food selection to more good than bad and see how that serves you!
